   Ok so people have been talking this one up since I started being heavily into SL back in June 07. What exactly is open sourcing the grid going to do? I mean, are we talking worlds within worlds here or is it basically just like having your own sim? If you run your own server does the economy transfer or is there no economy? Is it cost effective to run your own server? I mean a high end server with a fast connection isn’t cheap and do you have to maintain all the back end code as well? This is really groovy but what chunk of the population are going to be making use of this? I can see it being really big for corporations and education but I am curious about the rest of us.

   It actually does mean being able to run your own sim. Cost effectiveness depends on your purpose. As a company that wants to provide a training or meeting location – hugely effective. It can be a stand-alone sim not directly connected to any grid, or it can be part of the Second Life grid (likely for a fee of some kind.)

   As for economy – hard to say. If I ran my own sim, for instance, and plugged into the Agni (Second Life Main) Grid, then it is feasible to expect the Linden Dollar will continue to function.

   There are a lot of questions about it and we all can omy wait and see. There already is an open source project based on a reverse-engineered version of the Linden Lab server, called the Metaverse. But progress there goes slowly and it’s still in Alpha stage

   But, the point here is this: It can only get bigger and better from here.

   Huge, yes — but nothing new here. Linden Lab has been talking about doing this since April 07, and hasn’t made any progress that’s visible from outside.

   Yes, that’s tru, Mitch. I probably should have clarified (and I am first to proclaim I am *not* a journalist) – what I meant to be excited about is that for the first time since I’ve been following the story is a tentative date has finally surfaced… target February.

   Now, granted, this may not have been any secret. But it is the first time I have personally been made aware of even a target date. It’s always kind of seemed to be ‘in the air and we have no idea where it will land’. :)

   Yeah, it is pretty recent that LL announced a date for the open source material. In fact the first i saw a date announced was everyone blogging it this morning after a tech roll out schedule was announced. DusanWriter put up a really good post about it. On a lark i started looking around at servers but having zero ability to maintain the code aspect i doubt i will got the indie server route despite the temptation of complete creative control and selective population. The cost to buy and maintain a decent server and really fast net connection is comparable to buying and maintaining a sim so far as i can tell.
